How Does a Chain Binder Work?
There are two basic styles of chain binders. One is the lever binder, also known as the snap binder, and the other is the lever chain. Both are easy to install and use, but the lever type requires more strength to tighten. Lever binders are more convenient, but the chain is much tougher to tighten with the lever style. Cheater bars are used in this style, but they are dangerous and not recommended for long-haul work. The Industrial Wire Rope catalog includes detailed specifications for all types of chain binders.

Ratchet chain binders are typically used to haul heavy products. To use a ratchet chain binder, unscrew the ratchet on both sides and flip a switch located in the center. Then, hooks are attached to the chain links, and the handle moves up and down to tighten or loosen the chain. A ratchet chain binder has a locking mechanism that prevents the binder from falling over or coming loose.
Chain binders come in a variety of sizes and load ratings. Choose the one that matches your cargo best. For example, a 1/4-inch load binder can be used with Grade 70 Transport Chain. A 5/16-inch chain binder works with Grade 43 High Test Chain. The weight of a chain binder is tied to the type of load it will hold. If the load is extremely heavy, choose a binder with a lighter weight than the chain.
When choosing the right load binders, be sure to determine the length of your load. If your load is less than 10 feet long, you will only need one load binder. For loads that are between five and ten feet long, you'll need two. When calculating the working load limits, take into account the weight of the cargo and the length of the chain. Ensure the WLL of each chain binder is 50% of the weight of the load.
The weight of a chain binder depends on the model and brand. A typical chain binder can weigh from 3.5 pounds to 20 pounds. The heavier the chain, the larger the binder will need to be. Whether you need a lever binder or a ratchet style binder, you can find a biner that suits your needs. However, be sure to consider the safety of your load before buying one.
Both types of load binders require some maintenance. You can extend their life by lubricating the pivot points, screw threads, and pawls. You can also use a chain carrier to protect your load binders. If your chain is prone to damage, you should upgrade to a chain binder. If your chain binder is causing you discomfort, it may be time to invest in a better option.
